Reducing Juvenile Crime and Delinquency in the City of Schenectady - A Needs Assessment and Recommended Directions

CGR has recently worked with the City and County of Schenectady to thoroughly analyze and assess juvenile delinquency issues and risk factors and to help develop recommended directions to reduce juvenile crime. Prepared for the Juvenile Crime Enforcement Coalition, this study reveals substantial risk factors for and a growing incidence of juvenile crime and delinquency in the City of Schenectady, and it also underscores the increasing effectiveness of the juvenile justice system in diverting troubled youth from PINS and JD designations, family court proceedings and outside placements. The study resulted in a number of recommended directions to: target specific communities; address prevention, intervention, suppression and accountability in order to effectively reduce juvenile delinquency; promote further collaboration among service providers; provide family support and development; and develop integrated and holistic service approaches. Taken together the recommended directions provide a solid foundation for the City of Schenectady as it moves forward in its efforts to better combat juvenile crime and delinquency.
